A mind boggling thriller, Dennis Lehane has done it again, with an incredible story in Shutter Island. From the author of Mystic River and The Given Day, the intricate story line of Shutter Island is surprising, intriguing and impossible to put down. The story does start out quite slowly and it was difficult to get through the first few chapters of back story. However, once the action began and the plot began to unravel, the pages seemed to turn themselves.
Teddy Daniels, a US Marshal, is sent with his partner to Shutter Island, off the coast of Boston, to investigate a missing patient at a federal hospital for the criminally insane. As he attempts to get information from the staff and patients, he is constantly blocked by layers of bureaucracy and defiance from the doctors that run the institution. As the clues begin to pile up and Teddy closes in on the mysterious disappearance of a patient from a locked room, he understands that there is much more to the institution than meets the eye.
With an ending that is more surprising than any novel in recent memory, Lehane does an incredible job of character development, forcing the reader to really empathize with the plight of Teddy and the violent, murdering criminals within the institution. Now, a major motion picture starring Leonardo DiCaprio by Martin Scorcese, it is highly recommended that you pick up this book before seeing the movie.
