Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10 by Marcus Cuttrell is an edge of your seat non-fiction account of a man’s experience behind enemy lines in war ridden Afghanistan.
Luttrell walks the reader, in very specific detail, through his decision to become a Navy SEAL, including his preparations before and the rigorous testing and training that he endured while trying out for this elite arm of the US military. His very personal account helps the reader understand the dedication it takes to join this team and how trying the process can truly be.
He then describes how he and his three SEAL colleagues came under attack in rural Afghanistan and the fire fight that proceeded. The very emotional tale allows the reader to empathize with his plight and to understand the bravery needed for him to survive such an ordeal. While he does include some very personal opinions about the US liberal media and Taliban radicals he also explains how the Afghan people saved his life. In many aspects it is also refreshing to hear the point of view from someone who has been on the front lines and is confident in their trust of the US leadership.
