The Secret Speech by Tom Rob Smith is a thrilling tale set in The Soviet Union in 1956, following Stalin’s death. While the nation struggles to right itself from the violence and injustice that has plagued the people and country, The Secret Speech takes a look at how these changes impacted individuals in a menagerie of lifestyles.

Leo Demidov, a former MGB officer, is trying to right the wrongs that he has committed in the name of his country over the past years. With his focus on his family, attempting to unite his foster children and make up for his past transgressions, characters form his past, both those that he has wronged and those he has successfully worked for return to haunt him in his new found happy, quiet life.

Although the country, and it’s new leader, Krushschev, have pledged to change their ways and improve the lives of the citizens, the people are not so quick to forget what has happened to them. This journey takes Leo through the harsh Siberian Gulag camps, into the midst of rebellious criminals and finally face to face with the families and individuals whose lives his unquestioned allegiance to the state had made him ruin.

The twists, turns and suspense created by Tom Rob Smith are made all the more exciting within this time frame of a nation in turmoil and unrest. Extremely difficult to put down, The Secret Speech will engage any reader who enjoys a solid, fictional novel.
