The Facebook Effect: The Inside Story of the Company That Is Connecting the World by David Kirkpatrick is an inside look at the story of the creation of Facebook, it’s founders and the trials that they went through to become one of the world’s fastest growing businesses.
From the inception of the idea of ‘The Facebook’ in a dorm room at Harvard and the hard work involved by 19 year old creator Mark Zuckerburg to the explosive growth and expansion into a worldwide phenomenon, Kirkpatrick catalogs each step of the long road to the website’s success.
The beginnings of Facebook have been a bit of a mystery with the ‘fact-based’ movie coming out and portraying things in one light versus the media’s attention on the players involved. Kirkpatrick does an excellent job of interviewing both current and past employees in order to depict what seems to be an honest version of Facebook’s story.
The candid portrayal of Zuckerburg and his philosophies go a long way in helping to understand the way that the company was built based on a vision, rather than solely on it’s ability to generate a profit, which has contributed to the success. The Facebook Effect also does not shy away from highlighting some of the mistakes that the company has made over it’s short history from personal relationships to bad business decisions, but honestly discusses them and Zuckerburg’s decisions on how to improve things.
For a non-fiction business story, Kirkpatrick does an excellent job of keeping the story moving and weaving in answers to everyone’s questions while portraying the major players in the company’s history in what seems to be an honest light.

Child 44, the first fiction thriller starring Leo Stepanovich Demidov by Tom Rob Smith is both thrilling and disturbing. Based in Russia during the period surrounding the death of Stalin, Smith takes a look into the conditions wrought upon the people of the nation during harsh winters with no food and, at best, terrible living conditions. Bred from these circumstances, the citizens become tougher to survive while living in fear of their government.
Fast forwarding a few years, Leo is happily married with a great career in the MGB and is quickly rising through the ranks, allowing him to provide his family with comforts that most families don’t dare dream of. Through one tough investigation Leo begins to question his beliefs and not only the actions of the state, but the actions of himself in the name of the state. During a period when ‘crime does not happen’ Leo begins to suspect that something is amiss and the possibility of blatant murder is not something he can turn a blind eye to.
Tom Rob Smith does an excellent job of keeping the reader of the edge of their seat while following Leo through his discoveries of reality and a battle with his own conscience. Child 44 is the perfect fiction thriller with a bit of historical knowledge thrown in to add to the mystique.
Also be sure to check out The Secret Speech, another Leo Demidov novel.
